The Foundation

The journey to a perfectly set table begins with selecting the right foundation. This crucial first step sets the tone for your entire dining experience.

The first essential element of our tablescape is a premium table linen. Choose high-quality materials like our signature linen tablecloths. Consider the season; lighter fabric for Spring and Summer, richer textures for Autumn and Winter.

An effective yet simple way to create visual interest in your dining room is to layer different textures; don't be afraid to mix softer with rustic accents.

Always ensure that you are draping your tablecloth properly. You should be draping your tablecloth to have at least a 15cm drop on all sides.

Placemats and Underplates

When it comes to our next layer, placemats and underplates (otherwise known as chargers) are a definitive way to elevate your table from a weekday meal to a dinner party.

For formal occasions, look towards metallic chargers, and match them to tones in your room (flowers, vases, candlesticks). If you're looking for casual elegance that can be used throughout a variety of events, look towards natural materials like bamboo and raffia. Our current favourites are our natural woven placemats and their matching coasters.

A variety of sizes throughout a place setting will create dimension to your table; think about the dishes that you are serving, perhaps use a larger plate when serving food to emulate that luxury restaurant feel.

When it comes to positioning, start with your underplate or placemat as your foundation, then place your dinner plate centred on top. If serving salad, place a salad plate as necessary. Elegance derives from consistency; ensure that each setting is as identical as possible in spacing and alignment.

Accessories and Cutlery

Always place cutlery in order of use working from the outside, in. For instance if you are having a soup starter, then main meal, then pudding dessert, you would lay out a soup spoon, then knife and fork, then dessert spoon. Salt and pepper cellars should be within reach of every setting, so multiple may be needed depending on table size.

Bread plates and butter knives can be added where necessary, and are placed to the top left of the setting. Glassware should always follow these rules: water glass above and right of the setting (above the knife). Wine glasses are positioned to the right of the water glass, and where both are present, the red wine glass will be placed above the white in order to form a triangular shape.

Napkin Ring Selection

When deciding on napkin rings, go for a metallic ring to elevate your dinner table to a formal level. When dining casually, go for natural materials. A rustic twine can be extremely effective when paired with a small sprig of herbs, a couple of leaves, or even a flower from the garden. Napkin dressing can be a lovely way to bring a seasonal theme to your dinner table whether dining formally or casually. In a casual setting, look outdoors to the natural world and bring it indoors. For a formal setting, take inspiration from the colours of the season, and look to find rings in these tones. For eclectic charm, mix and match your rings, still in keeping with your general theme.

Centrepieces and Seasonal Adaptations

A centrepiece is the crown jewel of your table setting. It brings all elements of your table together, whilst creating a focal point for your dining experience.

Some considerations to have when deciding on a centrepiece are height and flexibility. Low-level pieces are preferable for easy conversation, ensuring all guests can see across the table. Whilst maintaining a below eye-level decoration, create a variety of heights to add dimension, and think of the flexibility of your design. Versatility in design will allow you to reuse it year-round.

Incorporate seasonal flowers and foliage and a mix of textures. To add a little sparkle, try adding metallic elements that match to your napkin rings, and lighting pieces.

Occasions and Events, or Casual Dining?

Different occasions call for different approaches to table setting. Here's how to adapt your styling for various events:

Formal Dining

When hosting a formal dinner, you should expect to serve multiple courses on a full place setting. Get artistic with your napkin folds, and centre pieces.

Casual Gatherings

For casual dining, place settings should be more simplified. When serving, opt for a family-style to bring the formality down a notch. Napkins should have relaxed presentations and centre pieces should be informal.
