If your son or daughter is anything like one of mine they are starting university this week and whilst this is an exciting time, living in a small dorm room or uni hall can sometimes feel impersonal. However, with a few simple decorating tips, you can transform their space into a cosy environment that feels like home.
1. Utilize Wall Space
Maximize your wall space by hanging up photos, posters, or artwork that reflects your personality. This not only adds colour and character to your room but also makes it feel more personalised.
2. Add Soft Textures
Incorporate soft textures like throw blankets, cushions, and rugs to make your space feel warm and inviting. Opt for cosy materials like fleece or faux fur to create a welcome atmosphere.
3. Bring in Plants
Add some greenery to your room with easy-to-care-for plants like succulents or cacti. Plants not only improve air quality but also bring a touch of nature indoors, making your space feel more homely, and if you aren't green fingered then use faux flowers. My daughter got gifted a plant from her green fingered elder brother so its also a lovely memento from him to her and may make her more inclined to look after it.
4. Personalise Your Bedding
Add a personal touch to your room by choosing bedding in your favourite colours or patterns. I treated her to some of the bamboo bedding and got a text saying her bed was more comfortable than home and she needs them there too. Consider adding a throw blanket or decorative cushions to make your bed feel more inviting and cosy.
5. Signature Scent
At home I have a signature candle that all my kids know is a firm favourite and reminds them of home and whilst they aren't allowed candles in their flats a diffuser does the job just as well, and will hopefully help keep the homesickness at bay
By following these practical suggestions, you can easily help decorate your childs uni halls to create a homely and welcoming space that feels like their own. With a few simple touches, you can transform their room into a cosy retreat where they can relax and recharge during their university experience.
